Wait, are you a sommelier?
At odds with me clearly telling you what I do is the misconception that sommeliers are the only industry experts.
He was trying to introduce me to a friend who likes wine. “This is Kara, she’s a…sommelier?” he turned to me asking, “wait, what is it exactly?”
“I’m a wine writer. I have certifications but I don’t work as a sommelier, which just means that you run a wine program,” I say.
“Oh okay,” he turns to his friend, “This is Kara, she’s an aspiring sommelier!”
LOL.
For about a year, I struggled with explaining to people what I do. I have certifications and I even work in hospitality part-time, but I’m a wine writer. Everything I do is about my writing.
In my city, most people don’t know what a wine writer is. I am one of the only ones. But people do know what sommelier means, probably because they’ve seen the Netflix documentary, Somm.
But do they, though?
